Mother's Day musings, a milestone, and a broken bone

Hmm... where to begin?!

This year, Mother's Day was one of the most memorable I've had.  Now that the kids are getting older, they spent a lot of time planning out things to do for me.  It was so sweet and made the day very special!

I was surprised with a new wood bird feeder for our tree outside.  I kinda gave Kevin a hint on this one.  It was a really sweet homemade gift that I will definitely enjoy!  They worked in the backyard to make it, using scraps of wood and leftover paint.  I stayed inside, pretending that I had no idea what they were doing.  :)  That is until Hudson came inside and while trying to keep their secret, he said "Do not come outside.  We are NOT making you a bird house."  Made me laugh!

I woke up to coffee and breakfast of my choosing.  Since I'm not a big breakfast eater, I chose donuts since I knew that would thrill the kids.  :)  The kids had presents for me, mostly of the handmade variety.  There were many handpicked flowers that quickly filled vases around the house.  Then there were cards...  Cameron's card read:

"Happy Mother's Day Mom.  Your smile is as cheerful as these colors (below that line he taped several multicolor strands of yarn).  Your eyes are as bright as these (next to that he taped two bright red beads).  Sorry I'm not doing school right now!  Hah hahahahahahah.  We need to live with an appreaceated mom.  We should make a mom appreaceation week.  Cameron"

Cracked me up!  Jackson made me several cards.  One card had a homemade necklace attached.  He used a string of yarn and wrapped a ton of colorful pipe cleaners around it.  While I was looking at it, he started crying because he was afraid I wouldn't like it and that it was too small.  I told him I loved it and then went to the bathroom to privately get the necklace on because he made it a little too small for my apparently large head.  :)  He was instantly happy again and then threw me a paper airplane that had two one dollar bills attached and he had written Happy Mother's Day on it.  The third card was simple with a piece of yarn that he taped to lay in the shape of a heart.  Man, I have some thoughtful boys!  Hudson was hilarious as well.  As I opened his gift that he made at school, he said "It smells really bad because my teacher made it smell like that."  It was a fabric pouch with his handprint on the front.  The reason it was smelly was because it was filled with lavendar.  :)

Another surprise the kids had thought up awaited me downstairs.  They had hooked up the baby monitor in their room and put the listening part upstairs where I was.  Then they announced they were ready for me to come down to their room.  As I opened the door, a paper that was taped in the crack of the door fell to the ground.  It said, "In deep voice Beware only mom may come inside".  So funny they wrote "In deep voice".  I opened the door the rest of the way and they turned the fan on at the same time.  They had it set up for the fan to blow me a paper heart they had cut out.  On it was written, "Happy Mother's day Mommy.  We love you with all our love."

Talk about making a girl feel special!!  I also got the book, One Thousand Gifts, which was on my wish list and cash to buy some new plants and outside stuff.  A very blessed and happy mama!

I also spent time with my own amazing mother and two of my sisters.  We went to Cowiche Creek Nursery and LooWitt's for some Mother/Daughter time.  Have I already mentioned that it truly was a BLESSED day?

And a pic of my fabulous children (who were having problems blinking and looking away).  It was the best we could do in the 5 minutes before we had to leave for church!  You can't see in the pic, but the bird feeder is in a tree right above the chair I'm sitting in.

Onto the milestone... our little Oliver is WALKING!  He is our latest walker, at 17 months old.  He crawled so long that he has worn out holes in most of his pants!  :)  It's so cute seeing them toddle around and it will be perfect timing to be able to start walking outside in the nice (or sometimes not so nice) spring weather!

Another major recent event comes from our second born.... It was a normal day filled with school and then lunch.  After clean up, we were all hanging out upstairs.  I was sitting in one of our living room chairs and Jackson was on another.  He was kind of climbing around on it and started to fall off head first.  It wasn't very far from the ground, but he instantly freaked out and buried himself under a pillow.  Once I got to him, I pretty much instantly thought he had broken his collarbone.  Poor boy!  After hours of waiting to hear back from his doctor, we were finally given an appointment to come in for an x-ray.  As long as we could get there in five minutes, they had said.  Thankfully we live close!  Poor Jack could hardly move.  He could barely move his feet forward at all to walk.  Getting up or down from sitting was excruciating.  Keep in mind that we were in a hurry!  We got the x-ray done and took a disc to our doctor's office.  We waited some more.  Jackson just wanted to be home!  The dr. called us out of the exam room to look at the x-ray.  It was crazy to see his bone like that!  Jackson was still not amused and just wanted out of there.  We took a prescription for some pain meds and headed home.  He definitely had a broken collarbone, but there wasn't much we could do at that point.  They put him in a sling until we were able to go to the orthopedic clinic.  The first few days were pretty bad.  He was in so much pain and just stayed in bed all day.  Even when he woke up in the mornings, he had to call for us to help him sit up.  It was so sad!  He finally turned somewhat of a corner, which is when we were scheduled to visit the orthopedic dr.  No new info there.  He was put into a different sling and scheduled for a follow up appt.  In the meantime, Jackson's soccer season was cut a little short.  He also got out of piano lessons and since it was his right side, he has gotten out of any handwriting (which makes school work a little difficult).  Lucky boy.  :)  And here's a pic of the x-ray:

Xray

Do you see it?  We are thankful that Jackson is well on the road to recovery and will hopefully be back to his normal and daring self, very soon.  :)

While the husband's away...

girls will play!  Kevin was out of town through this last weekend and I got together with a couple different friends for some adult interaction.  :)  We crafted and ate and laughed.  My kind of night!  :)  And stayed up too late, which I paid for.  Every. single. day.

I made this wreath.  I used all 200 (approximately) of the coffee filters I had on hand.  No idea how she only used 75!  My friend also used about the same amount as I did.  I also decided to pin them on (attaching two filters per pin).  Similar pinning as the heart wreath I made versus hot gluing like the tutorial.  Very cheap, but totally awesome and surprisingly large!  I had old coffee filters on hand, bought 100 filters for $1, and then got a straw wreath with a coupon for $1.62.  Less than 3 bucks total!

Wreath

This necklace.  (No tutorial for this one, just kinda did my own thing with the rolling/twisting flower technique.)  I've loved the similar necklaces like this that have floated around blog land for quite some time.  Just couldn't justify spending $46 which they are priced at on Etsy.  So I spent less than $5.  :)  I bought 1/16 of a yard of each color in satin priced at $3.99/yd.  Each strip of fabric came out to $.27  With the yellow flower, I used the whole strip to make it.  Every other color though, I only used half.  So I have enough to make another necklace!  The black and white flower is actually a cotton fabric that I already had.  And the necklace chain was $2.79 on sale.  For putting the necklace together, I used a similar technique as the tutorial for the necklace below.  Hot glued the chain to the top corner flowers.  Then I hot glued the flowers to a piece of felt and trimmed off the excess.  I then adjusted the length of the chain and added the clasp.  Cheap, easy, and I love it!

Necklace 1

And this necklace.  Thanks to Jen for the idea!  The chain was $2.79 and the fabric was $.62 for 1/2 yard remnant.  I made my necklace using the fabric, then let my friend use some to make a necklace.  And I still have a ton of fabric leftover!

Necklace 2

All images courtesy my iphone.  Fyi, the wreath pops a lot more in person and is a lot whiter.  The necklaces also have better color than the pictures show.

Kevin is working hard this week with a missions group in town, so I have another craft night planned for tomorrow!  I want to make this paint chip Easter egg garland.  Cute huh?!

Today

(lifted this idea from another blog)

Outside my window… Beautiful and much needed SUNSHINE!

I am thinking… all things school related.  Orders for next year and new things I want to cover with the kids.

My heart is… very grateful to be a mom.

I am thankful for… God's mercy and continuous love.

From the learning rooms… read biographies today about Jedediah Smith and Erid Liddell.  The kids loved it!  Planning to watch Night at the Museum this afternoon.  We're going to make a list of the historical characters in the movie and then spend time in the coming week(s) learning about each one.

From the kitchen… a box of apples is sitting on our counter.  Music is playing (klove).  The crockpot is waiting to be put away from last night's dinner.

I am wearing… jeans and a hooded sweatshirt.

I am creating… a clean art cabinet today.  Realistically that won't happen, I'm sure.... No real "crafts" going on at the moment.

I am going… to break up many sibling squabbles today.  Just one of those days...

I am reading… lesson plans.  Notes from Genesis, our sermon series at church.

I am hoping… these children stop fighting so horribly.

I am hearing… music playing, occasionally being drowned out by children's voices (excited screams and angry screams).

Around the house… little piles occupying various tables/countertops.  Not too bad.  Oliver is napping, or trying to, through the noise.  Kids are playing after finishing school, while I get a quick break.

One of my favorite things… is my morning coffee.  A must have!  One of my favorite times of the day is when the kids are all finally tucked in bed and Kevin and I get to hang out, talk, relax.  Sounds lovely right about now.  :)

A few plans for the rest of the week: Baseball practice for Cam tonight, BSF for Cam tonight, soccer practice for Jackson and Hudson tomorrow night, baseball practice for Cam on Wednesday tonight... Then early Thursday through very late Saturday (or Sunday morning) Kevin will be out of town in Mississippi on a scouting trip for the mission trip that he and Cameron will be going on in July with our church.  I have a friend coming over on Thursday night and another friend on Friday night to keep me company while he's gone.

What a day to embrace the camera!

So... I've been having the itch to blog and today when I saw several bloggers with the usual "Embrace the Camera" photos, I figured why not start there.  I rarely set my camera timer and jump in photos with the kids.  Maybe I'll start a new trend in our house!  :)

Kind of a weird day to start since we are in the middle of some serious sickness.  I'm feeling good now, but everyone else is and has been dealing with a bad bug.  Oliver is on day 6 and I'm pretty sure he had something, if not the same thing that continued before that.  Ava got sick two weeks ago on Saturday and has pretty much dealt with something since then.  Fevers every day for days on end.  Cam, Ava, and Ollie definitely had it the worst.  Thankfully, very little throwing up.  Sleepless nights and a tired set of parents.  Mix that with a busy schedule, homeschooling (or lack of), a girls trip for me to Seattle, and spring sports for three excited boys.

The older boys are all doing better and were very excited today to go to the Berenstain Bears at the Capitol Theatre.  Kevin got to take them and I am home (again) with Ava and Ollie, who are the sickest still at this point.  Hopefully we're turning the corner!

A little bit mean to take pictures of someone who's sick, but I set the camera on the table and only had to do the self timer once to get a shot of me cuddling Ava who was getting another dose of Tylenol.

IMG_2299web

We've pretty much lived in comfy clothes for resting and cuddling, but since it's St. Patty's day we really lived it up and got dressed.  In REAL clothes.  :)  And we've all got green on.  Two points for mom!

What we're currently reading

Kevin:  The Legacy of Sovereign Joy by John Piper (in the Swans Are Not Silent Series)

Samantha:  Crazy Love by Francis Chan

Cameron:  Can't keep up with this kid.  He's currently book-less while awaiting our next trip to the library.  He just read several Encyclopedia Brown books and every day since January 1 has been reading the One Year Bible.  Very proud of him!!

Jackson:  Magic Treehouse books from the library.  He's also daily reading a devotional, The Adventure Bible Book of Devotions.

Hudson:  Loves I Spy books and anything he brings home from school.  He likes the Jesus Storybook Bible for bedtime.

Ava:  Always looking through all sorts of books, and makes piles throughout the house.  She has almost completely worn out The Beginners Bible (the binding is shredding apart).

As for our family together, Kevin has been reading The Swiss Family Robinson before bed on nights that he's home.  He still reads through the Jesus Storybook Bible and other devotions.  In the morning, he's been doing a study with Cam and Jack called Choosing Self-Control.

I'm sure this list will quickly change... it's fun to document though.  :)

Cameron is 9!

Last night Kevin and I were talking before bed about the fact that we are about halfway done at raising Cameron.  I realize that 18 years won't be the end of our parenting journey, but it is likely to mark the time that we'll have Cameron home.  I can't believe it!  He is a joy and blessing to our lives and we are so proud of him.

He's having a party this weekend, but we let him open a few gifts today.  He got his own real tool set and the Prince Caspian DVD from his siblings.  Shhh, don't tell, but he's also got a Lego Star Wars set and Star Wars Clone Wars movies coming his way this weekend.  He loved the gifts and was completely thrilled to spend the day hanging out together.  We skipped school, had a traditional bday request for breakfast (donuts), his dinner of choice (lasagna), and a trip to Baskin Robbins for dessert.  He's one spoiled boy!  :)  The rest of the day held a lot of games, some Wii, basketball outside, and watching his new movie.

Cameron is an awesome big brother, loves sports, and still loves hanging out with his family (yay!)  He loves to read, is currently playing on a basketball team, and is very smart for his age (scoring at 98th percentile in math and 89th percentile in language arts).

Happy 9th birthday to our first born son!

Season of love.

It's always a little sad taking down the Christmas decor.  I'm glad to be done with the crispy dead tree, but when everything else gets put away our house feels a little bit emptier.  Even though Valentine's Day is a little ways away, I decided to get some Valentine's decor up on my bookshelf.

Some re-purposed Christmas decor (red pom pom ornaments, mirrored mosaic cone trees, and frames), an 'XO' sign from Target's dollar spot a few years ago (yes, I know it's backwards), and a handmade Christmas gift (silhouette picture from Hudson).  I popped in a few photos to the frames and had my mom arrange it all cute for me.

Definitely a nice pick me up following Christmas!

I also want to make this wreath.  Jen showed it to me a while ago and we're hoping to get together to work on it this weekend.  Right girls?  :)  It's funny how we follow the same blogs and ideas spread like wildfire online.  I've seen several other friends that have referenced it and are planning to make one as well!

if it weren't for this blog... a look back

I've spent some time reading through my past blog posts lately (for Ollie's book and just reminiscing.)  I was reminded of a similar event today at lunch when I gave Oliver his first grilled cheese sandwich.  Here's Hudson, about the same age as Oliver - doing the exact same thing.  I grabbed my camera to snap a quick photo for comparison.  Apparently Oliver isn't quite the monkey that Hudson was at that stage (which I'm sorta thankful for).  I think they definitely look alike though!  Cam, Hud, and Ollie resemble each other (to me).  Jack and Ava definitely look alike, which I definitely think they take after Kevin.  What do you think?

a penny for your thoughts

if the above were true, i'd be rich.  it seems that my mind never stops working!  like i said earlier, january is always crazy for me.  forget new year's resolutions at this point!  my goals for the new year usually transpire around the end of january into february.  and that's perfectly okay with me.

currently, i am:

  • organizing and archiving.  i cleaned up my computer, organized my archives and hard drives, and am tossing lots of trash.
  • re-assessing homeschool stuff.  new lists.  placing orders.
  • taxes. financial assessment.  plans, budget, etc. for home and work.
  • emailing a ton.  it's like the month of emails.
  • taking a break from working on my personal pictures.  i got a lot done and hopefully will continue working on it (before next january!)  excited to get Oliver's baby book and start working on my project life for 2010.
  • updating my calendar.  sports stuff, school, appointments, syncing with kevin's schedule.
  • inspired lately by pinterest.com
  • enjoying Professer Horner's bible reading plan
  • loving my new bible (Christmas gift from Kevin)
  • working on a photography class for beginners!  scary, overwhelming, but fun.
  • procrastinating by blogging... aka I'm getting back to work NOW!  :)

Some inspiration first... I loved this quote on a mundane Wednesday:

"Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous."

Jack is 7!

We decided to have Jackson's 7th birthday party while all the family was together.  We ended up celebrating on New Year's Eve (during the day, before the evening festivities).  Jake and Brady wanted to celebrate their birthdays too, so we combined them all for a super fun spy party!  I had been looking for a fun idea for Jack's party and loved the idea of a spy party.  I thought it would be fun to give each kid their own secret mission (to find their goody bag).  They each received a top secret paper with directions.  It said they first needed to obtain a secret identity and then gave them intel on where to find the package.  To get their secret identity, they got to put on a mustache and then get a secret agent badge.  I had made badges for all the kids with their agent number (birthdate) and then a spot to add their fingerprint and let them make up a code name for themself.  Then they were to follow their clues for finding their goody bags.  The kids loved it and it was super easy!

Agent 12 was Jackson (the number was their birth month and day put together)  He chose the code name: Spy 909.  Look at his cute Sherlock Holmes hat he got for the party!

Dessert was low key since we were about to have a feast for New Year's Eve.  Chrisanna had the idea of making those cute little faces with a mustache with oreos and whipped cream.  They loved it!

Happy 7th birthday Jack!
